So what was Google Panda all about?

June 30th, 2011

I know it’s been months since the Farmer slash Panda algorithm update at Google, but I recently came across this video from SEO MOZ video that I think sums up it very well….

The video hints at the fact that old SEO methods are probably becoming some what redundant. No longer is it good enough to just do keyword research, use those keywords in the correct way on the pages and build links to those pages. Thanks to Panda, content is now really king!

Not only do we have the Panda updates, but now we have the new Google+ feature where users can +1 results in google and also +1 pages which contain the button. I’ll also do a seperate post on the new Google circles feature, Google’s answer to Facebook.

Now us SEO people have to think about the user experience more and more and come up with fresh, new, interesting content to keep the visitors coming back.  Maybe SEO people will now have to become ‘good user experience people’.

Google’s New Favourite Places

May 13th, 2011

Google Places just got a whole lot more interesting. Previously, companies could put up a listing for free with a few photos, info, opening hours and maybe a YouTube video. But now, businesses which are already popular on Google Maps are being supplied by Google with window decals to display on their shop front. These decals include a QR code, which when scanned by a passer-by, displays the Google Places reviews of that particular business. This allows people to get a better idea of what that business is all about and what others think of it. While viewing the reviews, you can then ‘star’ that listing as interesting and this is stored under your Google profile.

This has transformed Google Places into a more interactive, engaging, and let’s face it, a lot more useful part of Google’s suite. This fantastic new feature seems to be only available in the US so far, but let’s hope that all going well, it will be rolled out here in Ireland and Europe too.

Genius use of twitter…

May 7th, 2011

The guys at Ben and Jerrys, or their marketing people, cam up with a fantastic idea. They use your extra twitter characters is include a link and message about fair trade. Genius, and sure to spread like wildfire.

It’s important to that organisations remember that twitter is about interaction and not a means of shouting from the roof tops. The same old stuff being peddled just wont work. Good to see an creative idea like this one.

Google like button

April 5th, 2011

Yes, that’s right, Google are adding what is essentially a like button to their search results, it’s called a plus one button. Looks like it’s going work like a recommend button on Google and your recommendations will pop up on your contacts search results. It’s a great idea in my opion, anything that helps you sift through all those very numerous search results is a good thing.
